Tips from a non custodial parent

What to do when your child comes to stay.

  1. Realize there is an adjustment time -  Smile often at the children

  2. Dont let your feelings for the other parent interfere with your relationship with your children.

  3. Keep acceptable or norms of your household as constant as possible  - this reassures children.

  4. The rules of  your household can be different from the other parents as they are probably different from your childrens friends households  - children adapt to these rules.

  5. Dont bad mouth the other parent  - regardless of the temptation to respond to taunts and accusations.

  6. Leave issues regarding your childs behaviour until after they have settled in.

  7. Reassure child/ren you love them but you dont want to live with the other parent any more.  That is your choice and its ok.

  8. Reassure the child/ren that families have lots of different looks.

Eg; some children have as their prime carer grandparents, foster parents, mum, dad etc.  These are all functioning options for families
