BPW
The mentoring book story
BPW Australia is part of an international organisation founded in the 1920's
for business and professional women. It now represents the interests and
concerns of working women to the UN and to media and governments in most
countries around the world. BPW Australia is one of the national
Secretariat organisations funded by the Office for the Status of Women to
provide advice to the federal government. There are BPW clubs in all
cities
and most regional centres around Australia.
BPW Australia has always had a focus on mentoring women - both as mentors and
mentorees. In 1997 a BPW member, Marion Tye, offered to write a booklet
that would support members in this role. She recognised that women seeking
a mentor rarely found one ideal person to fill the role, and that very few women
were confident trying to meet all the needs of the person they were mentoring.
That's where the concept of a portfolio of mentors comes in.
The national BPWA booklet that Marion wrote, �I need mentor/s, don't I?�
was redrafted to suit the needs of South Australian women by BPW South Australia
and the Office for the Status of Women. OSW funded the production of two
print runs and it has proved very useful not only to BPW members but to
women across the state and beyond.
